Montessori Mediated Learning

Glebe Montessori Mediated Learning Program

“Imagine a method…beyond limitations…that improved how EVERY person learns…for children with special needs…to gifted students…and everyone in between!” – Dr. Feuerstein

GMS’s innovative program, Montessori Mediated Learning (MML), is designed for children who have specific needs and require mediated learning with low student-to-teacher ratios in a Montessori multi-age, experiential learning, dynamic educational setting. During the morning work cycle, children receive highly individualized instruction and educational planning, as they advance at their own pace. Each afternoon, students join our mainstream junior or senior elementary classrooms and specialist programming.

The MML program integrates the Ontario curriculum guidelines with the pedagogy and psychology of Dr. Maria Montessori and Dr. Reuven Feuerstein, two doctors renowned for their ground-breaking theories and contributions in the field of child psychology and education. Dr. Feuerstein’s belief “that everyone, regardless of age, etiology or disability, has the immeasurable ability to increase their learning aptitude and heighten their intelligence” is one of that reflects the essence of Dr. Montessori’s educational philosophy.

The Montessori-Feuerstein mediated learning experience “helps students learn how to learn and provides them with the concepts, skills, strategies, operations, and techniques necessary to function as successful, independent learners.” Utilizing cognitive interventions founded on brain-based learning, MML incorporates Dr. Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) series of exercises, teaching critical strategies such as comparing, categorizing, sequencing…, into the Montessori curricula, to enhance children’s cognitive functions for academic learning and achievement.

The Montessori methodology focuses on the importance of a prepared environment. A calm, orderly, structured classroom environment, with educational materials that respond to different learning styles, gives children a sense of well-being and facilitates learning.

Incorporating the fundamentals of Dr. Feuerstein’s FIE developmental enrichment program within a Montessori framework can be transformational in enhancing a child’s academic performance, self-confidence and interpersonal skills.

MML programming builds:

Emotional Intelligence • Academic Performance • Study & Critical Thinking Skills • Self- Motivation & Self-Discipline • Social & Personal Skills • Self-Confidence • Communication Skills • Creativity • Community Outreach • Character Development

To date, Montessori pedagogy and Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) program have been successfully used across the world in a variety of frameworks, including the following:

  • Remedial programs for children with specific needs
  • Learning enhancement programs for immigrant and cultural minority students
  • Enrichment programs for underachieving to gifted children
